[00:00:46] And now, let's get to this episode.

For whom this episode is important

Dear Postdoc Transformer,
this is an episode that really is dear to my heart, and it's called, How Can You Be Satisfied With Juggling Your Children and Your Career?

[00:02:05] Since we published episode 36 on career and family, which is linked in the show notes, we have received so many DMs

[00:02:14] and they all boil down to this question. So this episode is part of my legacy as a professor of young talents, wanting to make a difference in the world. happy to know that my own children and my potential children in law can choose one day to listen to this when they are ready. Alright, as always, we have chapter markers, so this is a deep going episode, and if you feel like, writing down something and to revisit your thoughts again and again, I recommend jotting down the timestamps so that you can

[00:02:50] come back to this episode in a later stage of your life. So, that means save this episode for later in your podcast player.

[00:02:57] As a mom of two children, as a professor and a career coach since 10 years, I assure you there are high and low moments, more or less for every parent, juggling family and career. Even if it looks easy, it is not easy. And most of us are struggling. The struggle is real, but if you build your PostdocTransformation or your career in general, according to your vision of life, provided that you know what your vision of life is,

[00:03:28] you will be better equipped to identify and weigh all factors in. You need to make a good decision. For a temporary stage of your life. And you heard me correctly. I said temporary. The most important factors are you, your child or your children, and also your partner. Choosing the right partner for life is key and ideally this episode is listened by a couple before having children.

[00:03:59] Send and share this and maybe even listen to this side by side with your partner so that you can see the face when I'm talking about certain things.

[00:04:10] Let's pause for a moment to respect those who sponsor this valuable episode. I want to share with you my best marketing agent. Serving my underprivileged, underrepresented and underserved audience, leads and clients is key for me. As an Asian working mom, business owner and professor in Germany. But I can't be marketing and selling all the time.

[00:04:35] And I have to be mindful with my own resources. So I chose Podbean as my podcast hosting and monetizing provider. [00:06:01] Thanking our advertisers for their financial support, we are happy to return to our inspiring episode.

The demands and the resilience of your child or even children and your career to be juggled as rubber or glass balls will vary and change over time. There are sensitive time windows with peak demands And by the way, you and your partner are potentially both juggling your kids.

[00:06:30] And it is really only fair and future proof to discuss both partners willingness to juggle alongside.

[00:06:39] Even if you plan a lot, maybe your plan is perfect in theory. In reality, it will hit you definitely. The good news is, it's a temporary stage in your life. You can choose to control and improve your situation at certain turning points If you have high demand job skills, and here's my plug to listen to episodes 4, 22, 43, and 45, which are all centered around the demands in the future of work.

[00:07:13] There will be times when all you can do is really seeding, but if so, realizing that you are in the seeding stage and being determined that you will be able to reap is already helpful in times when you just have the feeling of losing control.

[00:07:29] And believe me, those high and low feelings will come. So be ready to give yourself time to reevaluate this question on a regular basis so you can upswing again.

Everything is connected like a baby bed toy

My hope is that you are up swinging and low swinging, that will happen. But the overall pattern will be in the positive direction.

[00:08:53] So this way you can turn this question into a more feasible one. How can you be satisfied with juggling children and career for your next stage of life? Now let's jump into how to re evaluate this question in general so that you can repeat this when you enter a new stage of your life.

[00:09:16] And with kids, if you don't have any kids at the moment, I can tell you with kids, that's usually at the natural turning points of starting external childcare, nursery, primary school, secondary school, something like that. every person associates different things with satisfaction, children and career.

[00:09:37] The question you have to answer is why do you want one or more children? Or not? Because everyone expects that from you? Because you want to be a mom or a dad? Are you willing to change your life upside down for having a child in your household? I kindly suggest about social freezing for women in their 20s to have the option to postpone becoming pregnant.

[00:10:03] And I already mentioned that in episode 36, Career and Family, as linked in the show notes. Now, next question is, how do you define a career and why exactly do you want to achieve that? Every person has the right and the responsibility, in partnership and alone, to decide on this issue again and again, to act and, if necessary, to revise it to the optimum.

[00:10:27] For more information, visit www. fema. gov Right? It's your career. It's your life. You can change it if you want it. And that means that all of these factors, you, the baby, the child, your partner, are connected like a baby bed toy that is hanging over a baby.

[00:10:47] And then if the baby touches it, then all other elements will also be moving, right?

Hey, before we continue, we want to appreciate those who financed this valuable episode for you. I want to share with you my time and energy saver. As a professor for industrial and occupational psychology, I also teach about the future of work. And as a former IT strategy consultant, of course I embrace AI to be a future proof podcast producer of the PostdocTransformation Show and the CreatingReorganized Show.

[00:11:21] Descript is the video and audio podcast podcast. editing tool of my choice. I pay for their creator plan and it's worth every dollar. Descript comes with an integrated professional remote recording studio for the best audio quality for your guests. For example, I record an hour interview with a guest or a solo, and instead of painstakingly Mistakenly doing a rough cut and deleting all the ums and uhs and filler words and rambling around which I did for hours, I now click on Descript AI, editing for clarity and my rough cut is done in seconds or a minute.

[00:11:54] For fine tuning, I edit text instead of audio waves and I just insert all my pre recorded music intro, ads and outro, like this one, in a matter of minutes. Descript support closed captions, fine tuned AI driven summaries, chapter markers and titles, which I feed into my show notes and podcast hosts.

[00:12:14] Descript even suggests the best clips for social media and the video editor automatically includes the synchronized speakers, cameras, and audio captions. I can also include stock graphics or pre recorded videos, and you can find all our short form examples on our Instagram and TikTok @postdoctransformation.

[00:12:34] If you want to try out Descript for your own podcast editing, DM or email me Descript so I can share my experience and consult you. Please check it out on my link in the show notes. I only get a small financial reward if you become their customer using my Descript link.
After this quick appreciation of our sponsors, we are now back in our insightful episode.

What are you willing to sacrifice?

Some connections may or may not last a lifetime, but they definitely still have a positive or negative effect. Even if the connection no longer exists, childrand careerrea can be perceived as rival, related, or even complimentary unconsciously in the short, medium, and long term. The parent's life is heavily affected by the children, and we're talking about healthy children, right? We're talking about a child that requires very limited care, but if you have a child that is sick in a chronic context, then obviously it will be even harder. So, are you willing and ready to sacrifice something in your life?

[00:13:46] to understand what this sacrificing means and what you want to sacrifice. Some things are irreversible. You cannot return the kid and say it's not healthy. It's the child that you have. And children are different. You can have A beginner baby, everything is easy, you can have a baby that really is challenging.

[00:14:06] Satisfaction is therefore not a stable result at the end of the life, but rather the conditions must and may be continually reanalyzed and agreed upon oneself and everyone evolved. So you can get to choose that. You don't have to just endure. Sure, some things are irreversible, but you can also change and adjust.

What you and your children need may change over time

Due to the lasting effects on the children, dealing with this topic before children are in the household is really vital for everyone involved,

[00:15:27] I have been working many years in business and for me, projects can be also reverted. And it costs a lot of money, but it is just money. You have to make a decision for your children or for your child.

[00:15:44] And then you have to also think about what is important for your own life.

[00:15:49] There is no such thing as 100 percent right or wrong. And what was initially suitable or unsuitable may change over time. We need to change and adapt to the situation.

[00:16:01] In this episode, I described a rational approach as a framework for answering this question. And you may derive your own emotionally relevant thoughts and actions from it if and when necessary.

[00:16:16] And that may not be the case now. And it may be different in 10 years time. If you ever need individual coaching in which deeper emotional discussions can take place beyond writing down your thoughts in a journal, DM me.

[00:16:32] Since I was pregnant with my first child who is now 10 years old, in the context of AI disrupting the future of work, this topic is more relevant and tangible for career ambitious women and men who want to have children or already have children. More and more men are also daring to become visible in professionally relevant social media with children, and more and more companies understand that satisfied employees provide more valuable and sustainable performance.

[00:17:02] Therefore, satisfaction begins with dealing with individual behavior patterns, too. You cannot just wait and hope and delegate to the workplace, to the employers, to the companies, whether you can sustain your career or not. It all starts with you and your partner. So are you ready to realize your own behavioral patterns?

Socialization

The convenient and quick action is not always effective. Let me repeat this. The convenient quick action is not always effective. Now, what do I mean with that? Number one, the socialization of a person, that is, the person becoming a functional member of the society, primarily in the early phases of life, according to Klaus Hurlman.

[00:17:55] 2006. and you can find all the relevant literature in the show notes. The impact factors of socialization include internal reality, that is, the genetic endowment, as physical and psychological foundations and also external reality. These are the living conditions as social and physical environment. In a life long and individual process,

[00:18:20] people can now process the two realities in a creative and productive manner on their own responsibility. Also your child will sooner or later have its own responsibility, whether it will do what it's told or not, okay?So this ability for personal responsibility can grow with increasing age and is influenced by the orientation towards authorities, more or less consciously acting role models. So it's just a hope that parents are the biggest role models. They mostly aren't. So it's more or less educators, teachers, trainers, transformational leaders.

[00:19:06] The result of socialization is then a change or adaptation to social patterns of thought and feeling and internalization of social values and norms and a personality capable of social action. So before you simply decide and act on the topic in focus here, or let things happen to you, it is worth to reflect on why and how you became what you are and who you are. It is more convenient, but not always effective to act the way you have always done it, or how your parents have done it, 10 20 years ago .

Hey, before we continue, we want to appreciate those who financed this valuable episode for you.

[00:19:54] If you want a relatively passive income, creating a paid e course as your service is a great option, especially if you are like me, an experienced teacher in higher education and now want to share even more knowledge and maybe also create a paid membership with live group meetings beyond the e course.

[00:20:13] Offering an e course is a no brainer. Thinkific is an AI infused platform. Learning Management System, which is a dream for every educator. After setting up an e course or membership, you also need to market and sell your e course. And that's when lead generation with TypeForm and podcasting with Descript and Podbean can complement you well.

[00:20:35] If you want to try out Thinkific for creating your own e course and membership, DM or email me at Thinkific, so I can share my experience and consult you. Please check it out via my link in the show notes. I only got a small financial reward if you become their customer using my Thinkific link.

[00:20:52] I want to share with you my number one lead generator, and you can start that even without a podcast. It's TypeForm and I use them to create free quizzes with open questions and multiple choice answers. I also predefined mandatory answers so I can qualify and score leads. Collect their email addresses for later nurturing.

[00:21:12] I can brand my quizzes with my audio files, branch a given quiz based on the answers for the different target groups, and maybe sharing specific podcast episodes or other information, and automatically send them an email after submitting the quiz. I even include the a calendar invite for those leads who qualify specifically.

[00:21:32] So, now I can help everyone on the surface and on a deep level for free and divert my own valuable time only to my high ticket leads. I collect all the data automatically after my initial setup as I have also integrated it. with my remaining tech stack. If you want to try out TypeForm for your own lead generation and qualification, DM or email me TypeForm so I can share my experience and consult you, please check it out via my link in the show notes.

[00:22:02] Again, I only get a small financial reward if you become their customer using my Thinkific link.
After this quick appreciation of our sponsors, we are now back in our insightful episode.

Representation matters

Number two, people use economically sensible mental shortcuts to reach their goals more quickly,

[00:22:26] and two of them are relevant to this topic. Number one is representative heuristic by Kahneman and Tversky in 1972. It can be understood here as favoring thoughts, objects, and people or events that are considered prototypically timeless. Variations on the prototype seem further away mentally.

[00:22:49] And that means that you have to find Prototypes, where you feel represented by these role models. And if you don't have any role models in your vicinity, this is my plug to you to find new role models.

And now it's time to thank Company ABC who sponsors this episode of the Postdoc Transformation Show. I will now be reading the company's answers to one of six bold questions so that you can choose to apply. For example, number one, describe your most valuable experts versus leaders in your company.

[00:23:25] Have they typically earned a doctor title? Number two. For whichever company roles or units do you encourage somebody with a doctor title to apply? Number 3. How would you describe your organizational culture in which your most valuable experts and leaders thrive in? To nominate an employer of choice so that we can ask our own formative bold questions, let us know via the click on the link.

[00:23:50] If you are a company representative, like in recruiting and employer branding, and now you want your company to be highlighted as an employer of choice for our audience, you can become a sponsor of a dedicated Postdoc Transformation Show episode. Just click on the link in the show notes, and now, back to the Postdoc Transformation episode.

What's and who are prototypical working parents for you?

And then there's also the Availability Heuristic by Tversky and Kahneman, 1973. In this context, it can be applied so that Decisions are made based on the information that comes to mind first and is therefore available.

[00:24:32] For example, the prototypical generation of the parents or parents in law or the executives who may be involved in your career decisions, like promote or not, is no longer up to date given today's requirements, or the prototypical immigrant background does not fit into the social image of a local family.

[00:24:52] Fortunately, we are finding more and more new and authentic role models for social diversity in this topic and professionally relevant social media like LinkedIn. So we can hope for more inspiration from many employees, not just at the highest level, because to be honest, they have reached their peak career 10, 20 years ago.

[00:25:13] So it's again, not so relatable to your situation today. Connect with me on LinkedIn. My community is full of great role models. Some of them I have or will interview for my PostdocTransformation Show. And until now, all episodes, I'm very proud of that. All episodes have been with women and some of them are also working moms.

[00:25:35] So, find and connect with them. So you can emulate what's worth for building your PostdocTransformation according to your vision of life.

[00:25:42] So, both heuristics are quick decision making ads, but do not always lead to the goal.

Now let's move on. Emotions can be an indicator instead of a dictator. What do I mean by that? Emotions are what make us humans, of course, and we can choose to let them guide us in our future of work. if you are a new listener, check out the relevant episodes 4, 22, 43, and 45 as linked in the show notes on the future of work.

[00:27:50] Why a rational approach is helpful to such an emotional topic can be explained in three ways. 1. According to the Theory of Cognitive Dissonance by Leon 1957, people are uncomfortable making the right decision when faced with incompatible thoughts.

[00:28:08] You then unconsciously tend to interpret incompatible thoughts to fit the decision you have made. That is, you sugarcoat things. If the thoughts become emotional and there is a strong need to gloss over the matter in order to be in harmony with the decision, it really costs a lot of mental resources.

[00:28:32] And that is particularly true for women during pregnancy, after birth, while breastfeeding, and that's because of the hormones. And for all parents during the child's milestones and nursery school, primary school, secondary school, illnesses, extraordinary events, parental overload and fatigue, etc.

[00:28:53] Here it would make sense to support each other as parents and to know that this is a time that you have to deal with together and accept that you have a personal network that you can ask or build a personal network so that you can ask it when the going gets tough.

[00:29:11] So, your struggles do not become too burdensome and then lead to stress.

[00:29:17] At that point at the latest, there is a risk of slow or below performance, and that can slow down and threaten your career. That's why if career is important for you, you have to Attend to the warning signs early enough so that you can rearrange your work, flag that you need help, etc.

[00:29:41] Number two is delay of gratification. That is according to Mischel, 1958, and that's the ability to forego an immediate effortless reward in order to obtain a larger, effortful reward in the future. And the later in the future, the greater reward is, the harder the delay of gratification is.

[00:30:03] Therefore, especially with the multiple burdens of having children and a career,

[00:30:08] resource replenishing activities such as daily short relaxation, rest time, meal, exercise, fresh air, etc. for yourself, or relaxing vacations with a family and if necessary, also as a couple or alone

[00:30:24] are ideally planned,

[00:30:26] at regular intervals and remembered in turbulent phases

[00:30:29] and anticipate it with joy in turbulent phases of your life. And I do that since a couple of years, that once we know the school schedule and my life schedule, then we try to book our holidays so that we have something to look forward to. Number three is somatic markers. And that's from Damasio from 91. Somatic or physical markers are signals that can be perceived more or less consciously when a situation occurs.

[00:31:06] When a decision is made and when the consequences are experienced. If the triggering situation repeats itself again and again, then the expected consequences based on the memory can lead to physical signals before the decision is made, which then influences the decision if these are attended to. Conscious reflection on good or bad consequences help here in order to master future situations to your satisfaction.

Let's pause for a moment to respect those who sponsor this valuable episode.

[00:31:46] So far, you have learned all my favorite marketing and sales tools. Now, how can you bring all the data from your audience, leads, and clients together so you can serve them on a value ladder and for the long term? Even after multiple touchpoints with you, you want to remain on their mind for when they are ready to buy your service or product.

Your resources

So now the question is, what are your resources for goal achieving actions? Well, resources can be viewed in different categories, according to Pfeffer and Salancic from 1978. And the following are suitable for this topic. Number one, financial income and expenses. Higher the income, the more and higher value expenses you can afford to ensure that childcare and housekeeping are in place, etc.

[00:33:30] So You can provide them yourself or by service providers during your own working times or in preparation times.

[00:33:38] And while higher education, like a doctor title, can lead to a higher income, but doesn't have to, the future proof industry and job are even bigger levers.

[00:33:50] When you start a job right after your bachelor or master degree. And for tips on future proof industries, please listen to episode four and 22. Number two, it's the network, the hierarchy. Okay. The more resilient the personal and professional network, the sooner and faster a plan B alternatively C, D and E, et cetera, can be called upon in an emergency.

[00:34:17] But remember. You have to build your safety net before you fall. The higher the hierarchy in your job, the easier it is To organize your everyday work schedule to your own advantage.

[00:34:33] But if you are in a greedy job with high stakes, it's also not easy to let go. Number three, organization, work design, and family scheduling. the more family friendly a company is, the more likely it is to have trusted working hours, home office or working from home regulations, flexible working times, etc.

[00:34:59] that helps to combine a career with family. Parents can also organize family appointments, obligations, appointments and hobbies according to resource saving criteria. And I know that many of you are internationals being the first in your current country. That means that your parents are not with you. Maybe your parents are not available anymore, so you cannot count on them as your resources.

[00:35:26] You have to also plan for that. Number four, physical logistics regarding places of residence, work, and care.

[00:35:34] So that means, is it all nearby? your commute between all the different places of your life, really is a burden.

[00:35:44] You need to reduce the logistics time.

[00:35:48] This is particularly important for small children and their parents, you know, a child falling asleep during pick up and drop off times,

[00:35:55] That usually is a nightmare and that even can last to the next day.

Technology is your friend

Number five, technological resources like surveillance and mobilization. So nowadays, and in the future, real time surveillance, remote monitoring options are very advanced. Please also listen to episode 46 on the European AI Act

[00:36:59] and the European General Data Protection Regulation and your own feelings regarding data protection represent a limit here. There are countries in which it is normal for you to be able to monitor your child and those providing care.

[00:37:16] Live during out of home care and hobbies, outside the home or in all relevant rooms of the house. So, surveillance can be a curse and also a mediation. virtual calendars update in real time on a first come first serve basis will also help you. So they can also be set to include display travel times that saves time and nerves and giving reading access to all relevant caregivers helps with the handover and also dealing with the expectations in the interest of the child. And that actually reduces the mental load for the primary caregiver. I remember having a birthday party for my kid and waiting for someone who said to come. But that child was at that time with a dad, and the mother did not tell the dad that he has an invite for the birthday party of my son.

[00:38:14] So it was a very stressful day for all parties. With remote and flexible working conditions rising and more or less being normalized, I can only recommend you to seek jobs where working from home is possible and normal. And I think beyond caring for your sick children and working. That doesn't really work well. Commuting to and from the workplace can sometimes be in conflict with school and childcare drop off or pick up times.

[00:38:45] And working from home can ease family life. The caveat is being visible for your career is not happening at home. Really. It's happening when the leaders are present with you.

Personal resources

I want to add another category that complements and underlines this list of five categories. Resources, that is personal resources, and those can be reflected and used to achieve goals. On the one hand, knowledge, abilities, skills, talents, and experiences, and on the other hand, feelings, motives, and values.

[00:40:30] And it is helpful to tailor the topic individually to your own strengths and priorities and to those who are involved. Resources naturally tire after use. They are used up and they have to be refueled. It helps to analyze and plan resources on a recurring basis in the short, medium, and long term.

[00:40:53] Basically you are guided by target to actual stage, which means that you should have a reserve, a balance, or look also out for deficiencies or depletion. If you have many processes ongoing so that you are juggling a lot of things, it is helpful to have access to the required resources for a short period of time in this so called round robin process by Kleinrock 1963, 1964.

[00:41:23] For example, all those beloved household chores like cooking, cleaning, washing, or whatever there is in the household that could be evenly distributed between the parents, the same number or distance of hobbies per child.

[00:41:40] How can you equally reduce the working times or maybe also work not in parallel, but more like back to back so that Every one of you parents can cater to the needs of the children while the other one is working.

[00:41:57] If previous socialization is a hindrance, other role models might be useful, and that means that you have to effectively break through the thought patterns. Choose your role models wisely. , this is your next call for connecting with me or others on LinkedIn when you find them to be helpful for your new socialization, even if it seems counterproductive to divert time to networking and appropriate associations and groups, such activities also allow you to get to know new role models and fellow campaigners, so to speak, or supporters, and thereby gain orientation, motivation, and inspiration.

[00:42:40] Through social learning, so learning by example, efficient and effective success critical behavior regarding resources can be learned. Just because you are not used to that, you can use those resources in a different way. That's Bandura, 1963.

[00:42:59] The more helpful thoughts are prototypical and available, the more cognitive and emotional consonants can be achieved with fewer resources.

[00:43:09] The more, And that leads to a temporary satisfaction with children and career. As soon as the children or the child and your career change, this has an impact on your satisfaction with this topic and thus new risks and opportunities arise. My rational approach I described here as a framework. For your question, how can you be satisfied with juggling children and career for your next stage of life is timeless.

[00:43:40] It's a timeless help for self help.
