[00:00:25] I share my tricks from creating this show, speak with business owners who run a podcast for their business, and learn from podcasting service providers about their tools boosting our businesses. My new video podcast show, CreatingReorganized, will also be a living example of applied industrial and occupational psychology for my students in real life.

[00:00:46] And now, let's get to this episode.

What if, your students use AI better than you?

Welcome back to episode 63, dear PostdocTransformer! This episode of our PostdocTransformation show is a juicy one for every educator and especially the scientist leaping into business competing with new graduates on the job market.

Have you ever wondered how current bachelor and master students are leveraging AI in ways that might surpass our own experiences?

For me personally, I teach all my bachelor and master students to use AI in their student assignments.

This episode also serves as leveling the ground for those students who have me rather late in their semester, and maybe were adversely limited in their AI usage by their educators.

Of course, I still see some beginners and awkward first steps with AI. But the best and most AI savvy students among them surely surpass my AI competencies. And as long as they use it ethically and proficiently based on what we teach them as industrial and occupational psychologists for example, I am happy with their development. AI skills are the key to the future of jobs! And I want my own students to succeed in real life!

If you don’t have a professor who embraces AI as much as me, let me share with you:
I am a trained psychologist, worked in IT strategy consulting for many years and my techaffine mindset has always served me well. The only reason why I can host and produce the PostdocTransformation show and my other show for small business marketing is, that I leverage AI systemically, or as I call it #CreatingReorganized. AI can create unforeseeable opportunities for you, if you want to build your PostdocTransformation according to your vision of life!

As a scientist leaping into business, it's crucial to understand the evolving landscape shaped by artificial intelligence. If you haven’t, I highly recommend listening to our previous episode 45: Your future of work is with AI, as linked in the show notes.

Ah, and do not wait, until a professor teaches you AI. I would not expect that from my fellow seasoned educators who aren’t tech savvy and don’t fear losing their jobs in academia. To take over the driver’s seat, I highly recommend listening to our previous episode 43: Betting on yourself for your future, as linked in the show notes.

Today, we're diving into how bachelor and master students are integrating AI into their academic pursuits, the emergence of agentic AI, and how we, as experienced professionals, can not only catch up but also lead with strategic and ethical foresight.

Segment 1: The AI-Enhanced Academic Journey

Let's start by exploring the academic environment. Today's students are not just using AI—they're immersing themselves in it.
From selecting research topics with AI-powered generators to conducting literature reviews using tools like Elicit (https://elicit.com/welcome)  and Semantic Scholar (https://www.semanticscholar.org/), AI is becoming an integral part of their academic toolkit.

They're drafting papers with the assistance of ChatGPT (https://chatgpt.com/), refining their arguments, and even receiving feedback on their writing. This hands-on experience with AI is equipping them with skills that are increasingly valuable in the business world.
They learn with Gemini (https://gemini.google.com) and Notebook LM (https://notebooklm.google/).

So here's your actionable prompt. Have you already played around with those tools as well? Because if you don't, you don't know what they will be capable of. Every semester I review my student assignments, and based on the capabilities that I see on the market in the free [00:10:00] versions, I raise the bar of my own expectation and tell them, you know, I know that AI can help you do this much, you still have to do on top of your human work.

And if I don't play around with these tools as well, then I might be deceived. So how have you played around with that for designing the right student assignments in your teaching?

For the last couple of months, I would say it was important to be able to prompt and I actually taught how to prompt will.

But the thing is, with the rise of agentic AI, it's not so important to prompt well, you can ask AI to help you prompt better, but agentic AI can work towards your goals and solve [00:11:00] tasks without you prompting it.

Let's delve into agentic AI—a step beyond traditional AI. Unlike reactive AI, agentic AI can plan, reason, and execute tasks autonomously. Think of it as AI with a mission, that processes multimodal data of your choice, to accomplish your goal, even if you were not able to prompt well enough it’s reactive AI components.

For instance, Qualtrics (https://www.qualtrics.com/) is utilizing agentic AI to enhance customer and employee experiences by turning feedback into personalized, timely actions across channels. In the airline industry, agentic AI personalizes responses based on customer loyalty, resolving issues immediately. In retail, it detects digital frustrations and prompts assistance. I worked at an international discounter and I can see so many use cases that would be solved better with AI than with humans.

This evolution signifies a shift from AI as a tool to AI as a collaborator, capable of handling complex tasks with minimal human intervention.

Here's your actionable prompt. I think this is a mindset challenge as well. Of your [00:13:00] work that you have thought that is done and driven by your prefrontal cortex? How much of that are you willing to give up to be faster, but also to be less in control if you just lay back and believe the newest shiny objects that agenda AI will come up with?

You have to still think, but it is a challenge, right? It's like, if you don't do sports for a couple of years anymore, then it's hard to get back, be sporty again, right? So how can you still maintain the intellectual control when you are working with ai?

And I think that this is something that you have to experience for yourself so that you can also let your students know what is the right thing.

Segment 3: Bridging the Skills Gap – Strategic and Ethical Leadership

As seasoned scientists, we bring a wealth of analytical skills and a deep understanding of research methodologies. However, the rapid advancement of AI presents a risky potential skills gap between you and your own bachelor and master students, that you have to anticipate and mitigate, if you want to be employable.

Since I have instructed my students to use AI in their student assignments beginning March 2023, I’ve designed, reviewed and graded hundreds of students’ assignments and bachelor and master theses. Here’s my point of view:

Ethically, it's imperative to ensure transparency, maintain human oversight, and uphold data privacy. While AI handles tasks and operates based on the human-directed goals, humans must remain in control of critical decisions and evaluation and application of the results.

Working with bachelor and master students, who are still learning to excel in their chosen discipline of studies, I experience frequently, that they still need to develop strategic and critical thinking as a leadership skill while working with AI.
And it’s also a question of personal and professional maturity and a question of self-efficacy. As a psychologist, I can only encourage you. Self-efficacy is not something you learn by the book, by learning from others, you still have to do it yourself.

A theory, model or concept of my lecture applied to this episode: John Kotter's eight steps of Change Model

To bridge this, I can now discuss a model, theory or concept from my lectures in industrial and occupational psychology. I chose John Kotter's 8-Step Change Model (https://hbr.org/1995/05/leading-change-why-transformation-efforts-fail-2).

1) Create Urgency: Recognize the necessity of integrating AI into our skill set to remain competitive. Everyone else is using AI. You better learn to master and capitalize on it or you fall behind – non employable because of your socialization in pure academia, non-employable for your research skills, and non-employable because you have neither business nor AI skills. But there is hope. AI can help you understand the business world.

2) Form a Powerful Coalition: Collaborate with peers and mentors to foster a supportive learning environment. Identify side projects for teaching or honing your business acumen, requiring usage of AI. Share your learnings.

3) Develop a Vision and Strategy: Define how AI can enhance your teaching, research and maybe business objectives.

4) Communicate the Vision: Share insights and progress with your networks. You are surrounded by smart PhD students, who are excellent learners, you can surely learn mastering AI as a ticket into your future of work.

5) Empower Broad-Based Action: Remove obstacles and encourage experimentation with AI tools. If you have access to lab resources, I would ask for AI tools licenses. If not, this is your personal investment. Using only the free versions of AI is like driving a sportscar with the handbrakes toggled on.

[00:12:56] Let's pause for a moment to respect those who sponsor this valuable episode.

And did you know that we offer deep dive e-course workshops and memberships at graduate schools? Maybe also at yours in the future. Ask your graduate school coordinator, whether they want to book my services so that I can deliver them to you 24 seven, 365 on your mobile device.
And even better, if you get us paid by your grad school, we will pay you 50 percent recurring sales commissions.
So, you will earn money with us as we help you and your PhD besties to [00:05:00] transition into business. We can build our PostdocTransformation together.

6) Generate Short-Term Wins: Celebrate early successes to build momentum. For me, in every podcasting season for both of my shows, I try out new AI tools or workflows to increase quality, productivity, or decrease time and budget.

7) Consolidate Gains and Produce More Change: Use achievements as a foundation for further advancements. After gaining traction with my social media marketing for my PostdocTransformation show, I have started my second show #CreatingReorganized for the small business owner, who wants to market and sell sustainably.

Hey, before we continue, we want to appreciate those who financed this valuable episode for you. I want to share with you my time and energy saver. As a professor for industrial and occupational psychology, I also teach about the future of work. And as a former IT strategy consultant, of course I embrace AI to be a future proof podcast producer of the PostdocTransformation Show and the CreatingReorganized Show.

Descript is the video and audio podcast podcast. editing tool of my choice. I pay for their creator plan and it's worth every dollar. Descript comes with an integrated professional remote recording studio for the best audio quality for your guests. For example, I record an hour interview with a guest or a solo, and instead of painstakingly Mistakenly doing a rough cut and deleting all the ums and uhs and filler words and rambling around which I did for hours, I now click on Descript AI, editing for clarity and my rough cut is done in seconds or a minute.
For fine tuning, I edit text instead of audio waves and I just insert all my pre recorded music intro, ads and outro, like this one, in a matter of minutes. Descript support closed captions, fine tuned AI driven summaries, chapter markers and titles, which I feed into my show notes and podcast hosts.

Descript even suggests the best clips for social media and the video editor automatically includes the synchronized speakers, cameras, and audio captions. I can also include stock graphics or pre recorded videos, and you can find all our short form examples on our Instagram and TikTok @postdoctransformation.

If you want to try out Descript for your own podcast editing, DM or email me Descript so I can share my experience and consult you. Please check it out on my link in the show notes. I only get a small financial reward if you become their customer using my Descript link.
After this quick appreciation of our sponsors, we are now back in our insightful episode.

8) Anchor New Approaches in the Culture: Make AI integration a core aspect of our professional identity as a future-proof educator and scientist leaping into business. For me, it’s me first, then AI for making it better. I can see my reluctance to pay a human, when AI can provide the same performance for less of my time or budget. I would expect, I am not the only leader who thinks like this. So, you better improve your “value add”.

Now here’s your actionable prompt: John Kotter's 8-Step Change Model can provide a framework, so you can structure your next teaching and research semesters. Looking at your teaching and research load, what from the model can you implement to ensure building AI competency before you leap into business?
Btw, you have to go step by step. You can easily go faster through each step, [00:25:00] but these are consecutive steps, meaning that they have a specific order, one to eight.

I want to share with you my number one lead generator, and you can start that even without a podcast. It's TypeForm and I use them to create free quizzes with open questions and multiple choice answers. I also predefined mandatory answers so I can qualify and score leads. Collect their email addresses for later nurturing.

I can brand my quizzes with my audio files, branch a given quiz based on the answers for the different target groups, and maybe sharing specific podcast episodes or other information, and automatically send them an email after submitting the quiz. I even include the a calendar invite for those leads who qualify specifically.
So, now I can help everyone on the surface and on a deep level for free and divert my own valuable time only to my high ticket leads. I collect all the data automatically after my initial setup as I have also integrated it. with my remaining tech stack. If you want to try out TypeForm for your own lead generation and qualification, DM or email me TypeForm so I can share my experience and consult you, please check it out via my link in the show notes.
Again, I only get a small financial reward if you become their customer using my Typeform link.

Segment 4: Mentoring the Next Generation – Teaching Strategic & Ethical Use of Agentic AI Through Business Projects

Let’s take a moment to zoom in on our role as mentors and educators. Because here’s the thing: scientists leaping into business are in the perfect position to shape the future of work—not just for themselves, but for the students they teach, coach, or supervise.

And I’m not talking about just helping students get better grades.

For me personally, my exams are just the minimal goal. The maximum goal is to equip them with everything they need to be successful in the business workplace. And that means that maybe I will never get feedback how well they're doing in their jobs, let alone that I will ever know how much impact I had.

But that's the scope of how I teach. I do not teach for good grades in my lectures. That is the standard.

I’m talking about guiding them to apply your academic curriculum in real-world business contexts, using agentic AI as a bridge between theory and practice.

And that is why I'm so keen on participating as a juror in startup competitions so that I can network with startup stakeholders who can then bring their expertise into our classroom, or I can bring my students to those places where they understand how incubating a business startup works, something like that.

So I want my students to have also a practical, real world example as soon as possible, and not just from theories and books.

Here's your actionable prompt. I'll give you five student project ideas plus two bonus ones you can implement directly in your classroom seminar or thesis supervision. Of course, you need to adapt that to your specific discipline and research or lecture topic, [00:29:00] these student project ideas at least are a great inspiration.

Like I said, bonus will be idea six and seven from my own teaching experience.

Hey, before we continue, we want to appreciate those who financed this valuable episode for you.

If you want a relatively passive income, creating a paid e course as your service is a great option, especially if you are like me, an experienced teacher in higher education and now want to share even more knowledge and maybe also create a paid membership with live group meetings beyond the e course.

Offering an e course is a no brainer. Thinkific is an AI infused platform. Learning Management System, which is a dream for every educator. After setting up an e course or membership, you also need to market and sell your e course. And that's when lead generation with TypeForm and podcasting with Descript and Podbean can complement you well.

If you want to try out Thinkific for creating your own e course and membership, DM or email me at Thinkific, so I can share my experience and consult you. Please check it out via my link in the show notes. I only got a small financial reward if you become their customer using my Thinkific link.
After this quick appreciation of our sponsors, we are now back in our insightful episode.

Project 1: "From Thesis to Product"

You can have students take their bachelors thesis topics and use agenda AI to conduct rapid competitor and patent research. Maybe they have created something that could easily derive into a product or a service, that can be even patented, or you can test market viability.

They can provide or create a website, a value proposition and product landing page if they have something that they can offer. You can benefit by learning how your research field translates into startup language. They can practice transforming knowledge into value. [00:30:00] Nothing of that has to be earning money in real life, but everything will help them understand how to use agentic AI.

Project 2: "AI-Enhanced Consulting Sprint"

Students form 3–4 person groups and act as mini-consultancies. Each group tackles a business challenge from a real small, medium enterprise or non-profit even.

In my case, I did this as well with my podcast, PostdocTransformation, and then they can be using agentic AI for generating hypothesis design, service, or research strategies. Find the right interview partners, and also conduct the interviews with them or summarize interviews, something like that.

You can have them present the solutions in client ready pitch decks and have a jury situation where they all evaluate the pitch decks and the presentation. That is really fun [00:31:00] and you can even bring in your own business contacts if you have them already. Or former PhD peers who are now working in industry as mentors or project sponsors.
That might be a bit too much, but here's a fun fact, in episode 62 I acknowledged that our new PostdocTransformation show segments are the result of my student consulting team Elina Srebric, Dicle Naziksoy and Sandrine Pover from last year. It might be interesting to review the same goals again with agentic AI.

Project 3: "Audit the Algorithm"

This one flips the perspective: students choose an existing AI tool used in business (like customer service bots, resume screeners, or productivity apps) and assess:

- Ethical implications (bias, transparency, fairness)
- Strategic fit (does it really solve a pain point?)
- Competitive advantage (how could it scale or fail?)

You benefit by gaining a deeper, more critical view of agentic AI in the market—and your students learn to balance innovation with ethics.

Project 4: "AI for Good" Incubator

Guide students to identify a social or sustainability issue in their curriculum field—then use agentic AI to:

- Design an app or service
- Build a prototype using AI-generated code
- Simulate a launch plan with AI-based customer journey mapping

This lets you bring purpose-driven innovation into the classroom, and perhaps even create real-world impact projects that enhance your own business visibility.

Let's pause for a moment to respect those who sponsor this valuable episode.
So far, you have learned all my favorite marketing and sales tools. Now, how can you bring all the data from your audience, leads, and clients together so you can serve them on a value ladder and for the long term? Even after multiple touchpoints with you, you want to remain on their mind for when they are ready to buy your service or product.

I am expanding my digital business. And I use ActiveCampaign as the centerpiece for all my services like email course, podcast, newsletter, show notes, websites, sales page, merch shop, forums, whatever it is as needed. As a former IT strategy consultant, I have high requirements on my tech stack and ActiveCampaign offers so many integrations to all my other apps.

I really use it daily. If you want to create your own digital business with various AI driven lead magnets and funnel options, DM or email me ActiveCampaign so I can share my experience and consult you. Please check it out via my link in the show notes. I only get a small financial reward if you become their customer using my ActiveCampaign link.

Project 5: "Teach the Teachers"

This meta-project lets students build AI-powered tools or micro-courses for their younger peers—or for their professors.

Can a student create an agentic AI that guides first-years through lab safety procedures?

Or one that teaches professors how to create quiz banks, using AI ethically and transparently?

Now, you’re training future AI-literate trainers. And in doing so, you’re cultivating entrepreneurial educators, not just academic achievers.

And if you want to learn how to turn this expertise into your business, go listen to CreatingReorganized, where I break down step-by-step strategies, my videopodcasting workflow to market and sell sustainably.

Student project no. 6: I teach my own students to [00:37:00] write podcast scripts that focus on our curriculum for their chosen non-scientific target group. I let them choose the topic as long it is within my curriculum. I let them choose what they want to teach, who they want to teach, and also the applicable situation, et cetera.

So they have to learn science communication essentially, but with an AI twist. And I only grade their reflective usage and control of AI, not the output from AI, and I also have an alternative that is more creative.
Student project no. 7:  Instead of creating another digital product, I teach my students also to create a printable exit game based on our curriculum for their chosen non-scientific target group, of course with AI. This final product, the card game, allows playing and learning together in [00:38:00] groups. Same rubric for grading as in no. 6.

So why am I sharing all of this? Because you have to learn a lot and then to teach them, you could easily have the feeling of I cannot swim and then I have to teach others how to swim.

Teaching is a great way of learning because when we teach students to explore business applications of their studies with the help of agentic AI, we're not only preparing them for the jobs that don't yet exist. We are also preparing ourselves for the kind of leadership academia rarely teaches and that will make you outstanding.

We are becoming builders of ecosystems. We are trailblazing a new kind of professoring.

Segment 5: Launching a Side Business with Agentic AI

You can also launch a site business with agentic AI, and that is more for yourself, okay? So you don't have to do that with your students. You can obviously explore side business ventures by leveraging agentic AI because it can serve as the business mentor that you don't have yet. Okay? Imagine that you can develop an AI powered market research tool that analyzes trends and customer sentiments in [00:40:00] real time for your own viable business product idea or creating an AI driven content creation assistant for marketing purposes. These applications not only enhance efficiently, but also open up new revenue streams. Starting with small projects allows you to experiment, learn, and gradually scale your efforts. It's about transforming your scientific acumen into entrepreneurial ventures, guided by strategic planning and ethical considerations.

And you know, when I started my podcasts, I started with just one episode, and then it turned out to be, I don't know, 12 or 13, 14 episodes, and then I hit the first 1000 listeners. And that meant that, okay, there is an audience for me. They will listen to me. So how can I make this whole process better now with AI maybe.

That is how you reverse engineer. And learn how to use AI because you now have a [00:41:00] reason. You have a purpose. So here's your actionable prompt. What of your research today can you build as a business product using agentic AI? Again, even if you will never earn real money with it. Learning from agentic AI, how it solves your problems towards your goal will build your business acumen.

You can learn how agentic AI solves your problems.

Here’s your actionable prompt. What of your research today can you build as business product using agentic AI? Even if you will never earn real money with it, learning from agentic AI how it solves your problems towards your goal will build your business acumen.

Leveraging podcasting for attracting the best students from all over the world

If you are a university chancellor, grad school dean, speaker, professor, have you ever wondered how to make your grad school stand out in the crowded landscape of academia?
Do you aim to attract the best master's students from all over the world to learn from and work with your professors so that your research remains globally recognized and well funded? Do you wish to repel bad applications which aren't tailored towards your grad school's research profile?

Now, let's talk about a powerful branding tool, podcasts. They're a game changer for higher education institutions. As a professor, active on TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, and a podcast host and producer of this Postdoc Transformation Show, I'm here to encourage all the graduate school representatives to think beyond the conventional marketing mechanism.

Instead of being one of many vendors, at a time limited grad school fair, why not create a podcast that showcases your grad school as the ultimate destination for the world's best masters students. Share inspiring and encouraging stories of your top PhD students, high profile alumni, your Your faculty and the incredible opportunities your grad school offers.

A podcast can be a window into your school's vibrant community. It's cutting edge research and unique experiences, and in times of AI generated marketing material, a podcast with your academic leaders. This would prepare your best candidates for the application.
Even better, you can support and make your current Ph. D. students and postdocs visible for their next career steps in academia or business. Remember, successful graduates elevate your grad school's reputation. So, if you are a university chancellor, grad school dean, speaker, professor, Consider this. By launching a podcast for your grad school, you can elevate your grad school's brand and tell aspiring scientists and employers what makes your grad school the best choice, with scalable, evergreen content.

If you're interested, forward this to your marketing representative and get our list of 30 sample episode titles customizable for your grad school podcast. And just enter an email address on my website, www. postdoctransformation. com as linked in the show notes. As a seasoned professor and podcaster, I'm also happy to strategize about how you can launch your grad school podcast on Podbean, the podcast hosting platform we use for the Postdoc Transformation Show, supporting scientists leaping into business.
