[00:00:46] And now, let's get to this episode.

The Future of Work: A Reality Check for PhDs Leaving Academia

If you’re a PhD student in humanities, social sciences, or STEM, and you have about one year left before graduation, this episode is your wake-up call.

By the end of this episode, you’ll have:

1.                      A clear understanding of why future-proofing matters.

2.                      Practical ways to apply this to your studies or teaching.

3.                      Three LinkedIn post prompts you can adapt to boost your career visibility.

4.                      A side business idea inspired by the future of jobs report of 2025.

Hey there, PostdocTransformers! Welcome back to The PostdocTransformation Show, where we tackle the big questions about your career beyond academia. I’m your host, Prof. Dr. Eleonore Soei-Winkels, and I’m kicking off season 6 with some podcasting celebratory news!

Personal behind-the-scenes

I’ll put a chapter marker for you to skip my personal behind-the-scenes, I just want to be very transparent with you, as you are leaping into business, and may become a leader one day, you will need to make some tough profit-driven business decisions.

Since November 2024, I had a longer that planned season break, not only because I launched my new show CreatingReorganized, which is received very well and leading me to a new business model, as I am now helping founders and small business owners to market and sell sustainably via a videopodcast. Tada! Even though most of you have actually tried to help me get a foot in the door at your grad school, I was not able to secure a single booking for my paid career transition workshops for the past year. Meanwhile, I had lots of DMs from small business owners, who want to know, how I run all my video podcast marketing on social media.
And now, I can even proudly say, I have been featured by my podcast hosting and monetizing platform of choice, Podbean in their very own inhouse video podcast: PodbeanAmplified, wohoo! And please watch that Youtube video, as linked in the show notes, if you haven’t, this is how you can support me to sustain the PostdocTransformation!

Sandrine Pover, Dicle Naziksoy, Elina Srebric

Also, I wanted to consider the excellent results of my student consulting project, where three of my students (click here to catch them on LinkedIn, graduating in 2026: Sandrine Pover, Dicle Naziksoy and Elina Srebric) have mainly consulted me behind the scenes as the podcaster of the PostdocTransformation show.

And this is how I have planned this season 6:

A series of 8 episodes, so you can spirally reflect to future-proof your PhD, so make sure, you hit the subscribe button to not miss out on your future of work!

Commuting-friendly 30 min as opposed to the 1 hr long foundational and interview-based episodes, let’s see how this kick-off will be, but I would also consider this as a foundational episode.

Optimized ratio of free value for vs. advertisement as sustainable monetizing

Dear original PostdocTransformer, thank you for sticking around, through seasons 3-4-5, when I had my beloved interview series and got back on track to my 100 % retention rate by creating a mini-series from episodes 56-60.

This season 6 is a dovetailed mini-series with three recurring segments focusing on a) subtopics of the future-of Work, b) how to apply that to networking on LinkedIn and c) to build your future proof PhD (also applicable for Master or Bachelor)!

Ah, by the way, I assume, that you have already created a LinkedIn profile and are ready to welcome curious recruiters, when you start posting on LInkedin over the course of the next 8 episodes.

However, if you want me to record a LinkedIn Starter Workshop for you, and at an affordable price, just DM “LinkedInWorkshop”.

At zero cost, you can also just connect with me, Eleonore Soei-Winkels, and copy what I do on LinkedIn to become visible for my business pivot (you are literally catching me in the act, as I am building a video podcasting business fueled by my new CreatingReorganized show for the small business owner who wants to market and sell sustainably). I know, this is very meta and I am also very transparent of what I do on LinkedIn, LOL.

In line with my future-proofing circular economy strategy, I will inject my podcasting insights into my CreatingReorganized show and vice versa.

And future is my cue: Today we’re diving into the future of work—more specifically, the future of jobs and the skills you need to land them.

Sounds futuristic? It’s not. The future is already here, and if you’re graduating soon with a PhD, you need to prepare now. Let’s talk about how the business workplace landscape is shifting and why your research skills alone won’t be enough.

The Future of Work: A Reality Check for PhDs Leaving Academia

If you’re a PhD student in humanities, social sciences, or STEM, and you have about one year left before graduation, this episode is your wake-up call.

You are lucky, if you are still a bachelor or master student, as you can take this season 8 as a blueprint for aligning your studies and possibly side projects with your ideal first job after the degree!
The job market is shifting FAST, and whether you plan to stay in academia or leap into business, ignoring these trends is NOT an option.
The Future of Jobs Report 2025 just out in January, and let me tell you—it’s a mix of massive opportunity and serious risk.

Future Jobs Are Unpredictable, But Your Skills Shouldn’t Be

So let’s talk about where jobs are growing, which skills will make or break your career, and how YOU can position yourself for success.

Let's pause for a moment to respect those who sponsor this valuable episode. I want to share with you my best marketing agent. Segment 1: What’s Happening to Jobs?

The world of work is changing at a historic pace.

78 million new jobs will be created by 2030, BUT 92 million jobs will disappear

So the question is—are you training for the jobs that will still exist? Most certainly you have not, but you can start your PostdocTransformation training now.

Future-proof industries that will see massive hiring include:

Tech & AI: Data Science, Machine Learning, Software Development

Green Economy: Renewable Energy, Environmental Engineering
Cybersecurity & Digital Infrastructure: Information Security, Network Specialists
Health & Social Work: Care Economy, Therapy, AI-driven Healthcare

On the flip side, clerical and administrative roles are disappearing. That means traditional "safe" jobs—like data entry, administrative assistants, and even some finance roles—are at high risk of automation.

Now, you might be thinking, Okay, but I have a PhD – the highest educational degree that the majority of people will never earn. What does this mean for me?

The good and bad news

Here’s the good news:

PhDs are trained problem-solvers, and problem-solvers will always be in demand.

The bad news?

If you don’t learn how to sell your skills in business language, companies will NOT see your value.

And the next hurts me, too, because I have been you —PhDs aren’t trained for adaptability. We’re trained to be deep specialists. And that’s a problem because businesses want interdisciplinary, tech-savvy problem solvers who can pivot quickly. I was lucky enough to have earned a PhD in neuroscience, and my tuition language was English. So that was an interdisciplinary and international graduate school experience with research stays abroad – but still I did not receive business training at that time. Also, I capitalized on the fact that I had to finish on time, because my scholarship was only granted for 36 months (which is a privilege, I know), so I coded all my research experiments by myself to be independent from the IT person who served the whole team. English and coding were in hindsight my transferable skills that qualified me for my first job as an IT analyst. No one in business until I was appointed as a professor for industrial and occupational psychology was interested in my theoretical research knowledge, LOL. All my research papers, posters, awards and certifications were colorful pictures – worthless in the business world. I still remember the look the HR person gave me, when she copied my original documents, LOL. Before I further digress, I just wanted to highlight that the skills and experience you are building today in the academia, aren’t necessarily the ones that help you leap into business. You need to adapt quickly.

[00:12:56] Let's pause for a moment to respect those who sponsor this valuable episode.

And did you know that we offer deep dive e-course workshops and memberships at graduate schools? Maybe also at yours in the future. Ask your graduate school coordinator, whether they want to book my services so that I can deliver them to you 24 seven, 365 on your mobile device.
And even better, if you get us paid by your grad school, we will pay you 50 percent recurring sales commissions.
So, you will earn money with us as we help you and your PhD besties to [00:05:00] transition into business. We can build our PostdocTransformation together.

Prompt engineering

Take this example: Prompt engineering—a job that didn’t exist a few years ago, but now pays six-figure salaries. AI tools like ChatGPT need experts who understand data, logic, and problem-solving. Who’s better equipped than a scientist? But if you’re not learning AI-driven skills, you might miss out. And by the way, the big AI companies actually hire PhDs for building their AI-models.

So what’s the takeaway? If you wait until your PhD is over to learn these skills, you’ll already be behind. You need to start today.

Or, don’t you fear to miss out on your future of work?

Hey, before we continue, we want to appreciate those who financed this valuable episode for you. I want to share with you my time and energy saver. As a professor for industrial and occupational psychology, I also teach about the future of work. And as a former IT strategy consultant, of course I embrace AI to be a future proof podcast producer of the PostdocTransformation Show and the CreatingReorganized Show.

Descript is the video and audio podcast podcast. editing tool of my choice. I pay for their creator plan and it's worth every dollar. Descript comes with an integrated professional remote recording studio for the best audio quality for your guests. For example, I record an hour interview with a guest or a solo, and instead of painstakingly Mistakenly doing a rough cut and deleting all the ums and uhs and filler words and rambling around which I did for hours, I now click on Descript AI, editing for clarity and my rough cut is done in seconds or a minute.
For fine tuning, I edit text instead of audio waves and I just insert all my pre recorded music intro, ads and outro, like this one, in a matter of minutes. Descript support closed captions, fine tuned AI driven summaries, chapter markers and titles, which I feed into my show notes and podcast hosts.

Descript even suggests the best clips for social media and the video editor automatically includes the synchronized speakers, cameras, and audio captions. I can also include stock graphics or pre recorded videos, and you can find all our short form examples on our Instagram and TikTok @postdoctransformation.

If you want to try out Descript for your own podcast editing, DM or email me Descript so I can share my experience and consult you. Please check it out on my link in the show notes. I only get a small financial reward if you become their customer using my Descript link.
After this quick appreciation of our sponsors, we are now back in our insightful episode.

Segment 2: The Skills You Need to Survive

The Future of Jobs Report pinpoints five core skills that will separate job winners from job losers:

1. Analytical Thinking & Problem-Solving – If you can break down relevant and complex problems in business, and solve them in a monetizing way, you’re golden. And monetizing is the key word here. You must develop business acumen, intrapreneurial thinking to be a valuable contributor in a company’s supply chain. And valuable means, you contribute to making more revenue than creating costs, hence increasing profit. When you deliver a return on investment, you give a company a reason for hiring and keeping you.

 2. Resilience, Flexibility & Agility – Business moves fast. Can you adapt? I stand with both feet in academia and business. From my perspective, the corporate IT strategy consulting world moves faster than academia. But in my own business I am faster than in both worlds. That’s because corporate companies are like a huge ship that is navigating slower than a startup that resembles a smaller speedboat.

3. Leadership & Social Influence – Companies need people who can be thought and people leaders—not just do deep research. You must be a team member and possibly a team leader and how we are socialized in academia is rather toxic and even if not, it’s not how people in business work together, so you will probably experience a culture shock in your first job in business.

I want to share with you my number one lead generator, and you can start that even without a podcast. It's TypeForm and I use them to create free quizzes with open questions and multiple choice answers. I also predefined mandatory answers so I can qualify and score leads. Collect their email addresses for later nurturing.

I can brand my quizzes with my audio files, branch a given quiz based on the answers for the different target groups, and maybe sharing specific podcast episodes or other information, and automatically send them an email after submitting the quiz. I even include the a calendar invite for those leads who qualify specifically.
So, now I can help everyone on the surface and on a deep level for free and divert my own valuable time only to my high ticket leads. I collect all the data automatically after my initial setup as I have also integrated it. with my remaining tech stack. If you want to try out TypeForm for your own lead generation and qualification, DM or email me TypeForm so I can share my experience and consult you, please check it out via my link in the show notes.
Again, I only get a small financial reward if you become their customer using my Typeform link.

4. Technological Literacy – You don’t need to be a coder, but understanding and more importantly, strategizing how to use AI, automation, and data analytics in a company’s goal-directed way will put you ahead. For technological literacy, there are two important predecessor abilities: a) The ability to see the business and underlying tech stack serving the human customers as big picture or from a bird’s eye view. b) the ability to recognize the right technology experts and to build trust both ways with them. Only this way, you understand for which business problem, you need which data from which technological expert to decide on the way forward.

5. Curiosity & Lifelong Learning – The most valuable people are those who never stop learning. At least, in this skill, you will probably beat everyone else in your vicinity. But within your work time, you need to focus on what’s business relevant in your learning journey.

So, the big question is: Do you have these skills? If not—start upskilling now.

Here’s your actionable prompt:
Find resources to learn business analytics, leadership, or AI for non-tech professionals.

Let’s step back to get a bird’s eye view!

Alright, we’ve covered where jobs are growing, the most in-demand skills, and what you need to do NOW to get ahead.

Remember, you are not just a researcher. You are a highly trained thinker, communicator, and problem-solver. The business world needs you—if you can position yourself correctly.

Hey, before we continue, we want to appreciate those who financed this valuable episode for you.

If you want a relatively passive income, creating a paid e course as your service is a great option, especially if you are like me, an experienced teacher in higher education and now want to share even more knowledge and maybe also create a paid membership with live group meetings beyond the e course.

Offering an e course is a no brainer. Thinkific is an AI infused platform. Learning Management System, which is a dream for every educator. After setting up an e course or membership, you also need to market and sell your e course. And that's when lead generation with TypeForm and podcasting with Descript and Podbean can complement you well.

If you want to try out Thinkific for creating your own e course and membership, DM or email me at Thinkific, so I can share my experience and consult you. Please check it out via my link in the show notes. I only got a small financial reward if you become their customer using my Thinkific link.
After this quick appreciation of our sponsors, we are now back in our insightful episode.

Segment 3: Applying this to your studies or teaching

So how do you bring this into your PhD life today? Two ways:

For your own research: Future-proof your work by integrating emerging trends. If you’re in life sciences, look at bioinformatics. If you’re in social sciences, explore AI in behavioral analysis. Adding tech-driven elements makes your PhD more relevant to employers. Stay tuned for the upcoming episodes of this series where we will deep dive into specific emerging trends of the future of jobs.

For your teaching: If you supervise bachelor’s or master’s students, teach them to think ahead. How can you incorporate discussions about AI and automation in your field. Show them how to find and interpret hiring trends. This not only helps them but positions you as a forward-thinking mentor.

By doing this, you’re not just securing your future—you rise by lifting others up with you. And isn’t that the true spirit of academia?

Segment 4: LinkedIn post prompts

Now, let’s make sure this isn’t just another good idea that you forget about. You need to start talking about your future-proofing efforts publicly, and LinkedIn is the perfect place.

Here are three post prompts to help you, and please make sure to watch my LinkedIn during this week, at least in the week, when I publish this episode. I will most probably adapt these posts for my own bachelor and master students of industrial and occupational psychology:

Self-reflection: “If my PhD in (FILL IN THE BLANK) ended tomorrow, would I be ready for the job market? What skills do I have beyond research? What’s my plan for adapting to the changing job landscape in industry (FILL IN THE BLANK)?”

Career exploration: “AI is changing hiring, from automated screening to skill-based job matching. How do you think this will impact PhDs in (FILL IN THE BLANK) looking for jobs in industry (FILL IN THE BLANK)? Let’s discuss!”
Personal branding: “Adaptability is my superpower. My PhD trained me to solve complex problems, and now I’m applying those skills to [Fill in the blank, AI, consulting, leadership, etc.]. Here’s how I’m preparing for the future of work (Fill in the blank).”

Let's pause for a moment to respect those who sponsor this valuable episode.
So far, you have learned all my favorite marketing and sales tools. Now, how can you bring all the data from your audience, leads, and clients together so you can serve them on a value ladder and for the long term? Even after multiple touchpoints with you, you want to remain on their mind for when they are ready to buy your service or product.

I am expanding my digital business. And I use ActiveCampaign as the centerpiece for all my services like email course, podcast, newsletter, show notes, websites, sales page, merch shop, forums, whatever it is as needed. As a former IT strategy consultant, I have high requirements on my tech stack and ActiveCampaign offers so many integrations to all my other apps.

I really use it daily. If you want to create your own digital business with various AI driven lead magnets and funnel options, DM or email me ActiveCampaign so I can share my experience and consult you. Segment 5: Build a side business around the future of job trends

Your expertise as a PhD gives you a unique edge to build a side business based on the future of jobs trends. Whether you have a background in qualitative or quantitative research, STEMM or social sciences, science-adjacent roles, or are aiming being employed or starting up your own business, here’s how you can leverage your skills:

For quantitative researchers: Develop AI-powered analytics consulting, helping businesses interpret workforce trends and hiring patterns using data-driven insights.

For qualitative researchers: Offer career storytelling services—helping professionals craft compelling narratives that AI-based hiring systems and recruiters understand.

For STEMM PhDs: Launch a tech-driven career coaching service specializing in future-proofing STEM careers with emerging technologies.

For social science PhDs: Create workshops and courses on adaptability, AI ethics in hiring, and workforce transformation for human-centered industries.

For science-adjacent professionals: Start a niche recruiting agency helping PhDs transition into business, connecting talent with companies seeking research expertise.

For startup-minded PhDs: Develop AI-driven job search tools, automation scripts for PhD hiring, or build niche career tech solutions.

Whichever category you fit into, the key takeaway is to monetize your knowledge of future job trends.

And if you want to learn how to turn this expertise into your business, go listen to CreatingReorganized, where I break down step-by-step strategies, my videopodcasting workflow to market and sell sustainably.

Leveraging podcasting for attracting the best students from all over the world

If you are a university chancellor, grad school dean, speaker, professor, have you ever wondered how to make your grad school stand out in the crowded landscape of academia?
Do you aim to attract the best master's students from all over the world to learn from and work with your professors so that your research remains globally recognized and well funded? Do you wish to repel bad applications which aren't tailored towards your grad school's research profile?

Now, let's talk about a powerful branding tool, podcasts. They're a game changer for higher education institutions. As a professor, active on TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, and a podcast host and producer of this Postdoc Transformation Show, I'm here to encourage all the graduate school representatives to think beyond the conventional marketing mechanism.

Instead of being one of many vendors, at a time limited grad school fair, why not create a podcast that showcases your grad school as the ultimate destination for the world's best masters students. Share inspiring and encouraging stories of your top PhD students, high profile alumni, your Your faculty and the incredible opportunities your grad school offers.

A podcast can be a window into your school's vibrant community. It's cutting edge research and unique experiences, and in times of AI generated marketing material, a podcast with your academic leaders. This would prepare your best candidates for the application.
Even better, you can support and make your current Ph. D. students and postdocs visible for their next career steps in academia or business. Remember, successful graduates elevate your grad school's reputation. So, if you are a university chancellor, grad school dean, speaker, professor, Consider this. By launching a podcast for your grad school, you can elevate your grad school's brand and tell aspiring scientists and employers what makes your grad school the best choice, with scalable, evergreen content.

If you're interested, forward this to your marketing representative and get our list of 30 sample episode titles customizable for your grad school podcast. And just enter an email address on my website, www. postdoctransformation. com as linked in the show notes. As a seasoned professor and podcaster, I'm also happy to strategize about how you can launch your grad school podcast on Podbean, the podcast hosting platform we use for the Postdoc Transformation Show, supporting scientists leaping into business.
